LIVERPOOL ONE NAMED BEST PRACTICE IN URBAN REGENERATION

THE £1bn retail and leisure development Liverpool ONE has been rewarded the Best Practice in Urban Regeneration award at the British Urban Regeneration Association awards.

Winning a BURA Award for Best Practice in Regeneration has become one of the sectors most sought after accolades; the programme is a celebration of imagination, innovation, inspiration and determination.

This award identifies Liverpool ONE as a development that makes a positive contribution to economic regeneration, with many projects acting as catalysts for wider regeneration and in turn creates long-term benefits for local communities.

This latest win brings the total number of awards won by Liverpool ONE to 45 since opening in May 2008.

Chris Bliss, Estates Director at Liverpool ONE comments:- "The acknowledgement from the British Urban Regeneration Association awards is a win we are particularly proud of. It shows once again that Liverpool ONE’s core ethos is in the regeneration of the city and building a place within the community. We have always understood that we are part of the bigger picture of Liverpool and integral to the regeneration of the city and feel this has been reflected in this achievement. As we enter our third year the challenge is now to maintain the high standards that we have set for ourselves and continue to do the region proud."

LIVERPOOL ONE MOTHER’S DAY COMPETITION 2010 WINNER...

WITH thanks to Liverpool ONE and the Hilton Liverpool, the lucky winner of the Champagne Afternoon Tea for two at the Hilton's stylish Prima Bar, overlooking the Liverpool ONE water feature on Thomas Steers Way is Mrs J Usher from Southport. We hope you have a fantastic time. The modern colour of the flower given out by children on Mother’s Day, in Britain is yellow. It is now traditional that daffodils are give out, representing joy, happiness and friendship. Often this yellow flower is presented in a hand tied bouquet or as individual flowers. We also allowed 'pink' after getting some emails with that colour as the answer. That is due to the fact that pale, candy pink roses where also once associated with essence English Mothering Sunday, but today it is the daffodil that is the standard tradition. Young role models honoured

LIVERPOOL’S Lord Mayor, a Commonwealth gold medal winner and a soap star are to honour almost 500 young role models at an Oscars style event on Thursday, 11 March 2010.

The “Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Ceremony” has been organised by the city council’s Integrated Youth and Play Service.

It will see 407 young people from schools and youth centres who have completed the bronze, silver and gold stages of the scheme presented with certificates at the BT Convention Centre.

Also honoured will be 36 “Street Mates” aged 16 to 19 who helped with the city’s Splash programme of school holiday activities for young people. They completed a mentoring scheme to help, assist and buddy up with youngsters who may be shy and otherwise unwilling to take part.

A further 41 “Health Mates” who encourage younger people to live a healthier lifestyle through eating sensibly and exercising will also be recognised.

Helping present the awards will be Commonwealth gold medal swimmer David Carry and actor Anthony Quinlan, who plays Gilly Roach in Hollyoaks.

Lord Mayor, Councillor Mike Storey, said:- “This is a great chance to showcase the terrific number of talented young people we have in Liverpool. By becoming Street Mates and Health Mates and taking part in the Duke of Edinburgh scheme they are developing valuable team building and people skills which will serve them well when they start work. It also gives them structured, rewarding activities to take part in during their spare time and prevent them from just hanging round on the streets. Universities and employers regard this type of work extremely highly, and that is why we are keen to encourage as many young people as possible to do something positive in their spare time. The aim is to create a new generation of people who give something back to the local community throughout their life.”

Entertainment will be provided by a number of talented young performers, including song and dance from St John Bosco Arts College, SFX College Choir, Catalystics and Cody Urban Dance.

More than a thousand young people at schools and youth centres are currently enrolled in Duke of Edinburgh in Liverpool.
