DELAYED FIREWORKS A FANTASTIC BLAST!

TO the disappointment of many, Liverpool Culture Company took the decision to postponed the Fireworks Display scheduled for New Year’s Eve. This was for safety reasons because of adverse weather conditions. At the time some thought this to be pessimistic, but atrocious conditions on that night proved the wisdom of their actions.

On Friday 5 January 2007, the event was held in more clement conditions, which allowed thousands of spectators in the St George’s Plateau / William Brown Street area, to enjoy the display in comfort. Elsewhere in the city area, like Everton Brow, folks experienced more distant viewing.

At 7.30pm, following a short introduction by city dignitaries, the button was pushed by two New Year’s Day birthday celebrants, Matthew Hindley, aged eight and Nancy Farrell, aged eighty. Both Matthew and Nancy have a celebration to remember and both received bouquets. They were among the many who had responded to Liverpool City’s request to hear from people celebrating their 8th, 21st, or 80th Birthdays in 2007 Liverpool’s 800th Anniversary. Those people who responded will receive birthday cards.

The Fantastic Firework Company provided a spectacular display from atop the Walker Art Gallery, which was themed to suggest significant times in the City’s history, including the spooky sound of wartime air raid sirens. Laser lights and patterns danced across the face of the gallery and the sky was riven by a riot of colour and form, all choreographed to very appropriate music. Their timing was excellent and the venue made the whole scene feel very immediate. The impact was thrilling.

It was a triumph for the organisers and for Fantastic Fireworks, who are due to give displays from 16 different sites in the city on August Bank Holiday. We have this firmly entered in our diary and suggest others do so too! A very successful evening was the verdict of all those we spoke to. Thank you Liverpool, Happy Birthday!
