The Village Nativity
Play
Photographs by L. Trollope.

A refreshing event, despite the present
stifling climate of over zealous political correctness,
took place on Saturday morning in Formby Village centre,
when "Churches Together in Formby" held
"The Village Nativity Play".
In an initial scene, children were preparing models for
a Christmas Crib and from this a simple portrayal of the
Christmas Story was cleverly evolved. Very young and
much older members of Formby churches of various
denominations took on the roles of the key figures of
the Nativity, with the help of real animals; sheep,
goats, a donkey and wise men on sturdy horses, all held
the attention of the many spectators. Carols were sung
throughout and on-going narrations were given. The
actors progressed down Chapel Lane from Grant's upper
window, from where the Angel Gabriel made his
pronouncement to Mary, to the "inn" (Baybutts
trailer) by Elbow Lane, where the Landlord sent all and
sundry, including the three Kings, "Round the
Back". The infant Jesus was portrayed by a real
baby, who obviously took the role seriously and behaved
impeccably.
Congratulations to all those who devised this event and
to all those involved, to excellent actors and to all
other supporters, from costume designers to animal
managers. Congratulations also to the authorities who
had the courage to allow this event to go ahead and to
the police, marshals, first aiders and all others who
helped make this happen.
This Play was a very simple, but effective message,
apparently much appreciated by the crowds who lined the
pavements to watch and sing carols.
After the event there was a Bethlehem Bazaar, where the
cast stayed in character to talk to people. The animals
were also on hand to be admired and petted. Father
Christmas lent his support and there were free stalls
with activities for children. All were well attended.
Food was available, with other refreshments in the Holy
Trinity Hall.
I do hope that this successful event will become another
Formby Village tradition.
