Southport's British Musical Fireworks 2006
Photos by Patrick Trollope BA(Hons) LBPPA.

SOUTHPORT’S 8th annual pyrotechnical treat took place on this Friday, Saturday and Sunday, the 22, 23, 24 September. The crowds who had gathered in anticipation were not disappointed. They had come from all round the region and beyond. The weather and conditions were absolutely perfect, a cloudless dark sky with a light wind, which meant the displays could be enjoyed without the hindrance of the elements.

On each night the spectators were given an educational display in which the different types of firework and their effects were explained. Then after a short interval, there was a delightful ‘water ballet’ during which the low-level fireworks were reflected in the lake and some of them actually glided on the water’s surface!

There were two main competitors each night who were watched by a team of judges comprising technical experts and lay people. They marked the competitors on Artistic Interpretation, Technical Merit, Variety and Overall effect including safety. The spectators were also invited to vote by texting their choice on their mobile phones.

Each team chose their own display choreography and music, which varied from classical to pop, rock and roll to music hall style like the ‘bee song’. All of that was accompanied by booms and crackles, hoots and whistles whilst the sky above us lit up in myriads of colours and patterns.

The teams were all experienced and the imagination shown in their interpretations was amazing as they co-ordinated a multitude of effects. They used different heights and areas of the sky and ground to utilise the wide variety of fireworks to which we had been alerted to earlier; from roman candles, cascades, spinners, ascending star showers to whole sky shell bursts radiating across the darkness, octopuses, halos, hearts and other dazzling designs like ships which fired at each other!

Each night was a veritable feast. The judges must have found their decisions difficult. We will look forward to seeing the winning team again next year.  Once again the shows were a credit to all who participated and to the organisers and sponsors who must have worked hard to have achieved this very successful event. Thanks also to the supporters including St John and other emergency and safety staff as well as the vendors who provided sustenance and entertainment to the crowd.

Some random comments were gleaned before the firework display. Most expressed dismay and felt that it would be a loss to the community, especially to young people and families. One local couple, however, were unconcerned as they felt it would bring regeneration to Southport and would like to see Southport develop, along the same lines as Liverpool, a café society image.
