Report By Alex Braham Photographs by Patrick Trollope.

IT was not as if there was a shortage of on-ground activities to keep the family entertained. An RAF Military and Army Village, Helicopter Pleasure Flights, Southport Model Aero Club, exhibition stands and microlights all occupied the Southport shoreline. However, everyone was imagining which, if any of the aircraft displays they were likely to see.

At around midday a cluster of “Red” could be seen coming from over the pier. It was apparent that the Red Arrows were about to start their display. The ten aircraft left spectators with their hearts in their mouths as time and time again the manoeuvres involved extremely close flying.

Despite more light rain at about 1.30pm on Sunday 3 September 2006, the flying programme for the rest of the afternoon was only marginally affected. Blades, a Harrier and Wingwalkers were just a few of the other aircraft to entertain aircraft enthusiasts during the afternoon.

Despite the weather everyone seemed to enjoy the event. One trader said he thought it was “Brilliant value for money”, while Trevor from Thornton Cleveleys commented that it was “Very enjoyable. Just a pity about the weather”.
