North West Aquarium Scoops Top Industry Recognition

THE Blue
Planet Aquarium, near Ellesmere Port, is celebrating a double
achievement this month after being granted full membership of the
British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquariums (BIAZA) along
with Scottish sister aquarium Deep Sea World in Fife.
BIAZA is the professional body which represents the best zoos and
aquariums in Britain and Ireland. It leads and supports its members
in delivering the highest quality environmental education, training
and research whilst achieving the highest standards of animal care
and welfare.
Both aquariums were subject to a rigorous inspection process to
assess their commitment to conservation, education and research and
were delighted when they were invited to join the organisation.
Matt Kane, Zoological manager for Deep Sea Leisure which operates
the two attractions, says:- “We are absolutely thrilled that
both of our applications for membership of BIAZA were accepted. It
is such an honour to be accepted to join this association who work
so tirelessly in promoting UK zoos and aquariums throughout the
world.
Through association with BIAZA, we hope not only to benefit from
collaboration with the network of other member aquariums around the
country, but also to raise the profile of the region as a
world-class venue for marine animal conservation and education.”
Despite being well-known for their impressive selection of sharks,
the Blue Planet Aquarium is also home to several conservation
projects. An example of this is a very successful breeding programme
designed to protect several species of tropical frogs as well as the
recently opened Reef Magic exhibition which aims to educate visitors
about these most fragile
of eco-systems.
Many members of staff are also involved in “Blue Watch”,
the aquarium’s voluntary conservation group, and work endlessly to
protect the marine organisms and ecosystems of the Wirral’s
coastline and beyond.
Both aquariums will enjoy the fantastic benefits of joining the
prestigious organisation such as national and international
representation, communication with the many other members and the
status of belonging to an organisation whose standards are of
internationally high repute. For more information, please visit
