THE National Blood Service (NBS) is calling for people across the country to ‘Give Before You Go’ on holiday this summer due to a dip in blood donors as nearly 40 million people leave the country for their holidays.  Blood stocks have been affected by various sporting events such as the cricket tests, the World Cup and Wimbledon, and in particular holidays, meaning the number of donors who traditionally give blood during the summer months has decreased.

Non-donors are being encouraged to think about giving blood for the first time before they go on holiday to ensure that blood levels are not dramatically affected by the decrease in people donating. Those planning holidays to exotic locations are also being asked to ‘Give Before You Go’. With many holidaymakers now travelling further a field, such as Africa, central America and Asia, this could prevent many from donating for up to 6 months.

Gordon Ramsay commented:- “It is vitally important that we all remember to give blood before we go on holiday. The busy summer schedule of sport coupled with the fine weather has meant that people who traditionally give blood at this time of the year have been busy and put it to the back of their minds. As our thoughts turn to booking a holiday and jetting off to the sun make sure that you remember to donate blood before you go away.

If you’ve never given blood before take just take a few minutes out of your busy day to register your details on the register. One donation of blood can save more than one life, and if you’re an existing donor then remember that you can give blood up to 3 times a year.”

Donors can ring the National Donor Helpline on 0845 7 711711 (open 24hrs) or visit to register their details and find the venues and times for their nearest blood donation session.

If you are aged between 17 - 60 years of age, in general good health and weigh over 7st 12lbs you could support the campaign, just call the Donor Helpline to find out more about where you can make your donation to help save someone’s life.

The total amount of blood donations required by each region in the UK each year is broken down as follows:

Area Number of blood donations required annually

North West

Yorkshire and NE 263,000
West Midlands 223,000
Trent 222,000
South 179,000
Anglia 237,000
London and South East 438,000
South West 204,000

The NHS needs 8,000 units of blood daily for hospitals across England north Wales.

Last year the National Blood Service collected 2 million donations from about 1.3 million donors. Sounds a lot? Actually it isn't. That's only 5% of the population, giving 2 or 3 times a year.

Letters To Editor:- "My Granddad"

"I am trying to find some history of where my grandfather worked. I knew he worked in Seaforth on the railway putting labels onto parcels, but I'm not sure if this railway was at the docks or a railway station. He worked until 1981(ish) when he retired and received a gold watch.

I would be grateful if anyone could help me. The only details I have of my grandfather is his identity

NAME Thomas Henry Campbell (snr)

D.O.B. 6th August 1916

ADDRESS 9 Netley Street
Liverpool 4

He claimed to be the fastest label writer in the office where he worked and indeed he was a very fast and neat writer as he tought me to write. Thank you."
