The Rock Star Lottery - a global online event!

Shelly and Steve

IN a manufactured pop world, an industry that views the likes of X-Factor, Fame Academy, Celebrity X Factor... blah, blah... etc, etc... as a substitute for real talent, an independent company has crashed the party, offering bands and artists the chance to win £1.5 million by joining up to an innovative concept ‘THE ROCK STAR LOTTERY’.

If initial interest from bands, and artists alike, is anything to go by, they are onto a hit in more ways than one. At last there is a platform for 'real' talent to be voted and viewed free from the gloss of who looks best and simply what music fits a primetime TV format. This is the real people’s music star search.

Over 600 bands have already signed up and registered for the competition as well as over 2500 members of the general public voting for the bands they like the most.

On July 23, the top 250 went though to the final stages of the competition. Once the winner has been selected any profits and subsequent record sales will be split between the winner and a voter who will be randomly selected.

This is a competition in which everything is in the public’s hands. They really get to vote for their favourite act, they decide who goes though and then, they have control, once the winner is selected. From the artwork of the album, to the songs, to the image of the act, as to who should be their stylist, or their make up person, the public makes every decision every step of the way.

The act will unfold in front of their eyes over a period of a time and unlike other reality shows, any money they spend on voting goes straight back into the competition to shape the act as to who is going to win.

The acts are encouraged to develop support to increase their votes, which they can do through the online community, thus they interact with the voters thanks to the bloggs and message boards as well as getting their own publicity. In fact what ever it takes!

This is an opportunity to win the record deal of a lifetime. In December 2006 the winner will be announced, but in the mean time the online community is building.

We were invited to the Launch Party at the Cavern Club on Sunday, 23 July, 2006 where we took a few snaps of the bands getting ready for the big night and also interviews the brains behind the competition Shelly and Steve. They told us that:- "The bands are from all over the world and the idea we have is to get them all together and have them helping one another. The pop industry is designed to segregate artists and labels, so that massive profits can be made out of the artists without the artists seeing much of the cash she or he, or they bring in.

Only through close co-operation with other small bands can things like gigs, publicity and other similar related ideas be achieved by small bands, without the need for expensive profit stripping labels. The idea of the lottery is not only to get publicity for the bands, but also to help them make networks and build up close working relationships with each other. What better way to do this but to do it in the home of modern pop music?"

The official launch party for the Rock Star Lottery featured:- Wickhead - from South Africa; Breaking Down – from Arizona, USA; Starseed - UK; Zenyth - UK; KTP and The Elements - UK; Seeker - UK and a little acoustic set from Alex Lato who started things off.
