IS A Nuclear waste dump to come to RAF Woodvale?

LAST week we got contacted by local Greenpeace spokesperson Liz Gould who told us that:- "Woodvale Airfield is on a list of places earmarked for dumping Britain's nuclear waste.

If local people back Tony Blair's plans to build new nuclear power stations across the UK, a move that would quadruple the amount of the most highly radioactive waste the UK has to deal with.

The issue of whether nearby Woodvale Airfield could be a nuclear waste dump site has reignited, following the publication of the recent recommendation by a Government advisory body:-

(1), that Britain's existing nuclear waste should be dumped underground. Woodvale Airfield was one of 537 sites identified in the 1980's as 'geologically suitable' to be an underground waste dump by radioactive waste body NIREX.

(2). NIREX is now refusing to rule in or out any sites from the original list, meaning any one of them could be selected. The dump will be expected to hold highly radioactive waste, some of which would remain dangerous for up to a million years.

A waste dump would result in regular transportation of nuclear waste near Formby and Southport which are vulnerable to accident and terrorist attack!

There is no failsafe way of dealing with nuclear waste. Dumping it underground simply creates an environmental time bomb for future generations, and could have catastrophic consequences for people living in this community.

The first thing we need to agree is that we are not going to produce any more nuclear waste. Residents in Formby should instruct their MP Claire Curtis-Thomas and Southport should instruct MP John Pugh to tell Tony Blair that more nuclear reactors and more highly radioactive waste is not an option.

The Government must commit to developing a clean and safe energy future, today."

Over this week we will try and get some more information for you our readers on this breaking story.
